What is traditional Chinese joinery?

Traditional Chinese joinery uses intricate, interwoven joints to create furniture without the use of nails and screws. By using this intricate joinery system, the furniture can acclimatize in real time to extreme changes in temperature and humidity, which cause most solid wood furniture to crack and warp. The joinery in the furniture allows the wood to "breathe" during large swings in temperature or humidity, letting the furniture expand and contract to prevent cracks and warping. They’ve put a lot of effort into refining traditional Chinese joinery techniques and introducing them to contemporary work, with the aim of maintaining and featuring the art form.

  • American White Ash: FSC® certified

  • Wood finish: Low VOC (99% VOC free)

  • Bamboo: Renewable

  • Leather: Sun at Six’s leather comes from a second-generation family run tannery in Tuscany. They use all vegetable tanned leathers, which is produced using traditional vegetable tanning processes that date back thousands of years. It involves vegetable tannins instead of heavy metals like chromium, which is used in conventional tanning processes. The vast majority of leather tanning uses chrome, which is quicker and cheaper, but the chromium salts and tanning liquors are worse environmentally. Vegetable tanning leaves a better environmental footprint, but is more costly and takes longer.

Production Waste

  • Sun at Six reuses sawdust to fuel boilers in their kiln-drying operations so that they do not use fossil fuels.

  • As the factories are ISO-14001 certified (Environmental Management System) waste is minimized as much as possible. Any remaining waste is disposed of properly.
