BAUX
Thoughtfully crafted, bio-based, modular acoustic design for your workspace, lounge, or hospitality space to increase productivity and decrease stress.
About
Founders: Johan Ronnestam, Fredrik Franzon and the founding members of the design studio Form Us With Love, Jonas Petterson, John Löfgren and Petrus Palmér, 2013
Headquarters: Stockholm, Sweden
Manufacturing + Production: Sweden, U.S., Australia
*All factories, besides the factory in the U.S., run on 100% renewable energy.
Materials
BAUX has a strict criteria in selecting new materials:
possible to trace the material back to it’s source of origin
zero risk of recycled materials containing dangerous content
low amount of volatile organic compounds (VOC)
possible to recycle and/or reuse the material
BAUX Acoustic Wood Wool
*Not to be confused with sheep wool, this is WOOD wool!
BAUX didn’t per se ‘choose’ to use cement in the Wood Wool – it has naturally been an ingredient in Wood Wool products for generations. The cement provides many benefits to the products that otherwise would not have been possible to reach. By using cement, the product is really strong and endurable, the lifetime is over 50 years. It is also very fire resistant, rot resistant and regulates both heat and moisture. From a lifetime-perspective, the product is therefore a good sustainable product compared to many other short-lived products.
Wood: FSC® and PEFCTM certified, from the forests in Österbymo, Sweden
Cement: partnered with Cementa, recognized as the world’s most sustainable cement supplier (carbon neutral!)
Water
Properties:
moisture regulation
heat-accumulating
fireproof
sound-absorbent
low emissions
Did You Know?
Once installed, BAUX Acoustic Wood Wool panels also capture CO2 from the surrounding air in a reactive process called carbonation. The limestone in the cement reverts back to its original state when CO2 is collected. Independent tests show that, thanks to its open material structure, BAUX Acoustic Wood Wool is able to carbonate as much as 70% of the CO2 that is emitted during the manufacturing process.
Baux Acoustic Pulp
100% bio-based, 100% recyclable, 100% biodegradable
Cellulose: Cellulose from sustainably harvested Swedish and FSC® controlled fir and pine trees.
Wheat Bran: Non GMO wheat bran. 5% wheat bran used for color (used instead of paint, to make it a 100% natural material)
Potato Starch: Naturally catalytic combination of starch extracted from potatoes for strength. The cells of the root tubers of the potato plant contain leucoplasts making it ideal for strength.
Plant Wax: Plant derived wax for further increased fire protection in the product
Citrus Fruit Peel: Naturally catalytic combination of potato starch, plant based wax and citrus fruit acids from lemons, limes, and oranges to provoke the cellulosic molecules into creating a powerful matrix of intermolecular fusions for strength.
Properties:
biomimicry engineered
lightweight
durable
fire-retardant
water-repellent
color from wheat
laser-enhanced sound absorption
BAUX Acoustic Felt
Made of GRS (Global Recycled Standard) certified recycled PET bottles
100 % PET, whereof 60-65 % Post Consumer Recycled content. Oeko Tex Standard 100, class I
Accredited by IOAS.
Only 6 precise colors
Manufacturing + Production: How’s it Made?
BAUX Acoustic Pulp
The manufacturing process is both sustainable and highly technological. The cellulose mix is formed inside a 3D mould with a powerful vacuum method and dried under high pressure. The surface is nano perforated using an advanced laser technique.
BAUX Acoustic Felt
Collected bottles are washed and chipped into recycled PET flakes, then melted down and spun into the recycled fibers.
To avoid generating excess materials, the textiles are pressed (vs glued) into a single standardized sheet and precisely cut.
To minimize unnecessary production and streamline assembly, only 4 standardized hardware pieces (made of 100% recyclable metal and 100% recyclable plastic)
Carbon Footprint
BAUX released their first Sustainability Report in 2020 to be as transparent as possible about their raw materials, production processes, etc. They believe people deserve to know their impact on the planet. Learn more about BAUX’s carbon emissions data at their most recent Sustainability Report 2021. We’ve listed some pages below to see data on specific topics.

Production Waste
Acoustic Wood Wool
80% of wood waste from production is used to heat the factory and drying plant.
Acoustic Pulp
ZERO waste in production. All material waste is recycled back into the production process and reused. All water used is built into a closed circular system and recycled. The only emission from production is a tiny amount of pure and clean water vapor that is released as the material dries.
Warranty, Repairability, End of Life
Acoustic Wood Wool: 50 Year Warranty
Acoustic Pulp: 10 Year Warranty
Acoustic Felt: 5 Year Warranty
Acoustic Wood Wool and Acoustic Pulp biodegradable. Acoustic Felt is 100% recyclable.
Packaging
Pallets and pallet collars are made from wood, biodegradable
Interleaving paper and corrugated boards are recyclable as paper
Plastic wrapping should be sorted as plastics, not biodegradable but recyclable
